Hakone & Mt. Fuji

Mt. Fuji, the great symbol of Japan, is world-famous for its perfect cone shape of unparalleled beauty and it is registered as a World Heritage Site. This sacred mountain has long been the object of worship among Japanese. One of the best plans to see Mt. Fuji is the round trip to Hakone from Odawara as the pictures below indicate, which includes visiting Owakudani with spectacular volcanic landscape.

The only thing you have to do is bring the fine weather with you because Mt. Fuji is very shy. And on top of the picturesque views, you can enjoy various kinds of vehicles like a Shinkansen bullet train, a cable car, a ropeway and a pirate ship.

Leave Tokyo around 9:30 by  Shinkansen. The newest one named “Nozomi” can run at a speed of 186 mph.

Change trains at Odawara sta. The mountain train goes up steep slopes running forth and back (switch back system).

In rainy season beautiful hydrangeas welcome you. And in autumn the tints of autumn colors greet you.

Owakudani was ever called “Big Hell”. It was created 400 thousand years ago. White steam is gushing out of cracks in the earth.

Pirate boat sails Lake Ashi formed by volcanic eruption. You can enjoy  the orange Torii gate of shrine against the green trees.

This is Hakone barrier. During the Edo era, feudal lords had to live in Edo and in their domains in alternate years, and their wives and eldest sons had to remain in Edo as hostages. So incoming guns and escaping wives were strictly checked here to prevent from rebellion.
